"'Rain at the horizon' sets the tone for this grey and black view of the sea."Artist comment: "My favorite times at the edge of the ocean are when it is rainy and windy and grey. Here on the Northwest coast of Washington State, I am in my element frequently! As the coastline recedes into the distance, the ancient volcanic rocks appear lighter, more misty. In this oil painting on canvas, I sketched the composition in a 'reverse C' style. I began at the sky with clouds and 'slanting rain'. Then I painted the translucent wave in a complementary green for a touch of color and to emphasize the focal point. Next I put in the headlands (the foreground rocks are done with a palette knife to articulate their ruggedness). Lastly, I painted the foam and runoff with lighter tones of grey and pure white highlights." |
