"Nasturtiums nod their pretty orange and yellow heads alongside a garden fence."
Artist comment: "These were the first flowers planted in my new home in Olympia, Washington. I lovingly dug a spot on the sunny side of the tall fence and carefully pushed each wrinkly white seed into the soft soil. Careful watering and considerable patience were soon rewarded with round lobed leaves. Soon bright flowers appeared and pushed their little faces toward the sun. When the moment was right, I snapped their portraits and not long after that I got out my watercolor paints, a small sheet of Arches 140# paper, sketched them, and proceeded with a greenish/brown background. Leaving the flowers white, I did all the leaves. Finally I painted the flowers. With the end of the brush handle, I 'scored' lines for the veins of leaf and blossom. The pigment settled in those grooves and made them darker. I finished by picking out the white centers with a razor blade."
