Washing Hands

- by Claudia Goodell

This week's theme: Hands

We start the week with our 15th and final member that was accepted into EBSQ Juried Artist for the Spring jurying session. Congratulations, Debbie! If you are interested in seeing the work of the other members accepted to EBSQ Juried Artists, please see the last two weeks of Art Of The Day.

The rest of the week will be devoted to hands. When you lookup 'hands' at dictionary.com, there are 18 dictionary entries. That sounds lengthy, but when you include all the definitions for hand as a noun, verb and adjective as well as the phrases and idioms, you begin to realize that as a word "hand" is no simple thing. For our purposes, we are going to stick with the first definition for hand as a noun.

hand /hænd/
- noun
1. the terminal, prehensile part of the upper limb in humans and other primates, consisting of the wrist, metacarpal area, fingers, and thumb.

Art: Washing Hands by Artist Claudia Goodell
I was searching for a subject matter and color scheme that would compliment a bathroom, but did not want to paint the common images found in these places. This pastel on paper was inspired by a photograph I found, and each time I see it now it reminds me of the signs in public bathrooms that say, "Employees must wash hands before leaving". That always makes me laugh.
