Art of the Day: Friday May 22, 2009

- by Tony Roberts

This week's theme: Hands

We start the week with our 15th and final member that was accepted into EBSQ Juried Artist for the Spring jurying session. Congratulations, Debbie! If you are interested in seeing the work of the other members accepted to EBSQ Juried Artists, please see the last two weeks of Art Of The Day.

The rest of the week will be devoted to hands. When you lookup 'hands' at, there are 18 dictionary entries. That sounds lengthy, but when you include all the definitions for hand as a noun, verb and adjective as well as the phrases and idioms, you begin to realize that as a word "hand" is no simple thing. For our purposes, we are going to stick with the first definition for hand as a noun.

hand /hænd/
- noun
1. the terminal, prehensile part of the upper limb in humans and other primates, consisting of the wrist, metacarpal area, fingers, and thumb.

Art: Hands by Artist Tony Roberts
Tony Roberts has been experimenting with super-fine artworks, using laboratory glass. The finished work consists of a fine sheet of fused glass, 1mm thick, with the design outlined in superb colour. This is a beautiful artist's proof - an experimental work - never to be repeated. It is supplied framed, for the protection of the work (the frame actually supplied may be different to that shown).
