Abstract Squid

March 2009

I love the way sea creatures move under water. They are so graceful and they almost appear to be moving in slow motion.

I also love Copper. It's warm and soft and ages to a beautiful patina over time.

I use these EBSQ shows to help me break out of my normal creative routine so this squid show was perfect.

I used 18 gauge Copper wire to make tentacles and the body for my abstract squid. I then wrapped the body with 20 gauge Copper wire. I hammered the body for texture and strength. I heated the whole piece with a torch to give it a more mellow color with some variation.

There is a lot of movement in this piece because I made it so the tentacles move and sway, just like under the sea.

The squid and tentacles are 5" long and about 2" wide. The copper ball chain necklace is 16" long.

The Giant Squid, genus Architeuthis, is a deep ocean dwelling creature. They can grow from 30' to 45' feet and have a sophisticated nervous system and brain. They catch their prey with their tentacles and use their powerful beak to shred their food. Their only known predators are the Sperm Whale.
