Art: The Embrace by Artist Amy J. Van Denzen
I think this piece says exactly what I was trying to achieve. This is all about how your passions sometimes become dangerous & consuming. The mermaid's fears and her passions have now collided & she may not be able to get out of the grip of something that wants to consume her. The octopus (one of my favorite ocean subjects) is coming at her almost as a over-aggressive lover, wanting all of her & accepting nothing less. It's a misconception that the octopus is only a reef-dwelling creature, as it also inhabits the Bathypelagic zone of the ocean. Octopus are reknown for their ravenous appetites, which leaves little outside of their diet, & it also explains the suction cup marks & beak scars that have been found on large whales (who also dwell in the Bathypelagic zone of the ocean). Octopus are also reknown for their great intelligence, which makes them a formidable & frightening predator in the darker depths of the ocean. This was done in acrylic & liquid metals, with a hard charcoal brought in as a detail enhancer. SOLD
