Mary Cassatt often chose the theme of motherhood for her paintings--frequently posing a sleeping child being held by his adoring mother. "Sleepy Baby", "Mother and Child II", "Mother and Child III" and "Baby's First Caress" all carry this loving theme, and it is with that influence that I painted my niece and her first baby.
