Art: Mantis by Artist Jason Lyons
Insects are mechanical wonders of nature. Each seems to have some abstracted or freakish feature that in turn has evolved into the perfect “tool” suited for its purpose and that is where I begin. My work exploits and emphisizes that feature with the use of everyday objects that lend themselves so naturaly to the subject.

I will set for hours just watching and analyzing the habbits of these creatures that I then transform into the resulting welded sculptures you see here. One of the most exciting parts of the process for me is when I find that perfect piece that lends itself perfectly to a particular insect appendage or some other body part.

I guess I am just facinated by how perfectly they are evolved and designed, each so well suited to the purpose they serve . With my work, as I mentioned before I find the correlation between objects we use in everyday life and these insect “Tools” to be facinating and as I am scouring the local flea markets and junk yards I am always seeing things as they can be or what they “Really” are rather that their everyday intention.

I enjoy standing back watching people analyze my work and point out all the various items that went together to create the piece.

I hope that you the viewer will also gain the same enjoyment that I receive in the creation of these personable creatures - thanks for looking.

This particular piece it all started with the head and the pinchers. I found this particular bicycle seat with its large springs and shape I knew instantly what this was to be. Then came the pinchers which as I learned are “Frog Pinchers” (that was a new one for me) from there I was off. I literaly worked down from there and the pieces just fell into place.
