Sunflower Ladybug Vignette

- by Pamela K Wilhelm

This week's theme: Helianthus

They are named for the sun. Their symmetry is based on Fibonacci numbers. They are native to the Americas, but have traveled widely and have captured the eyes and imagination of people all over the world.

This peice was created specifically for the Lemur show.

I took this as an opportunity to paint something WAY out of my expertise and paint an animal which is far from my forte'. (and to read up on their plight)

I tried to capture the cunning of the creature as he snaps his head to try to catch a view of somthing just off canvas. (Almost stoic waiting to see if he needs to hide or play.)

This was quite fun and enjoyable - plus I'm pleased with my first real attempt at an animal. :D

(It is also a Triad color scheme using deep smoky purples for the fur, burnt oranges for the limb and smoky greens for the forest - each color intermingled with the others for shading.)
