ex-voto (alzheimers)

- by Amie R Gillingham

This week's theme: The Artist's Book

The written word. Once only available to the few, these compilations were valued as objects as much as for content. In the 21st century, the production of books and paper has become cheap and easy. Though to many, they are treasures still. There are artists that honor and explore this fascination with books in their art. Whether through fabrication, alteration, or a combination of these, the artist-made book and its pages are a unique and beautiful form of expression.

Art: ex-voto (alzheimers) by Artist Amie R Gillingham
this piece is dedicated in loving memory to my grandfather who died of complications relating to alzheimer's disease in july 1999.

i feel this piece is a strong representation of what happened to my grandfather's mind as the disease progressed; all of his memories became jumbled into one lump so as to become useless or inaccessible. names, words, dates all became meaningless, leaving the rest of his book...blank.
