They are named for the sun. Their symmetry is based on Fibonacci numbers. They are native to the Americas, but have traveled widely and have captured the eyes and imagination of people all over the world.
Amongst my sunflower images, this one stood out with all it’s jagged edges. As I studied the image it was surprising that virtually every part of the plant was jagged right down to the spiky, furry stems and the uneven surface of the central seed area. Even the petals have jagged tips. This was a new observation of this plant for me.
