The Surfer

- by Kristine Ashcraft

This week's theme: By The Sea

If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, summer is winding down. Some kids have started a new school year and those who haven't will be starting school soon. Here in the US, Monday is the Labor Day holiday. It's the unofficial last day of summer and the last holiday until the chilly winds of Halloween. This week EBSQ's Art of the Day is spending this last piece of the summer season at that oh so iconic vacation spot - the beach.

Art: The Surfer by Artist Kristine Ashcraft
This photograph was taken in the summer 2007 during a trip to the Oregon coast. The subjects are my two stepchildren and an unknown surfer who just happened to be strolling by. In all my years growing up in Oregon and my hundreds of trips to the coast, I had never seen a surfer. The Pacific ocean off the coast of Oregon is COLD to say the least! On this day my two stepkids from Ohio (who are enchanted everytime we visit the ocean) just stopped suddenly to stare at this surfer walking by.

This picture was taken using a FugiFilm S5000 Digital camera. I converted it to a 8 bit grayscale using PhotoStudio to make the photo black and white.
