Summer Kites

- by Carol Thompson

This week's theme: By The Sea

If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, summer is winding down. Some kids have started a new school year and those who haven't will be starting school soon. Here in the US, Monday is the Labor Day holiday. It's the unofficial last day of summer and the last holiday until the chilly winds of Halloween. This week EBSQ's Art of the Day is spending this last piece of the summer season at that oh so iconic vacation spot - the beach.

Art: Summer Kites by Artist Carol Thompson

With steady winds and sunny days, Lincoln City, Oregon, is one of the most popular kite flying places in the Northwest. These particular kites are attached together by a double strand of strong string and can be made to perform aerobatic maneuvers by manipulating the hand held bar to which they are attached.

Artist comment:  My husband and two sons took turns flying a 'rainbow' stack of seven TRLBY kites as I photographed the scene with a future painting in mind.  With oil, I sketched the composition loosely, then proceeded to paint sky and sea and sand, leaving the details white.  I carefully rendered the kites and tails.  Finally I painted the figures on the beach.  I like the way the warm sand compliments the bright kites.
