Looking Back

- by Kathabela Wilson

This week's theme: Back

back /bak/

  • noun - the rear surface of the human body from the shoulders to the hips.
  • adverb - expressing a return to an earlier or normal condition.
  • verb - cover the back of (an object) in order to support, protect, or decorate it.
  • adjective - of or at the back of something.

"Back" is a word that can fill many grammatical functions. This week, EBSQ's Art of the Day presents art that illustrate a few of the ways the word "back" can be used in the English language.

Art: Looking Back by Artist Kathabela Wilson
"Looking Back is an example of my unusual and very personal "Natural Ready-Mades". (Ocean-works category) On frequent walks to the ocean, I find and create "creatures" by posing found wood and stone in the sand. They are very simple, usually one or two pieces, and anything used is found on site. These striking images seem to be alive and transmit a strong vital and symbolic character that grow from their shapes. In this case the "creature" (aided by this artist) made compass-like circles in the sand behind him, and looks back at where he has been.
