Art: Lemmings at Sunset by Artist Emily J White
Lemmings are smallish rodents (about the size of a guinea pig) that live in cold climates such as New Zealand and the Arctic. They are probably best known for the myth that they commit mass suicide by jumping off of cliffs. This myth is born from the fact that they have quite erratic mating cycles, and in some instances over-populate to the point of starvation! In order to avoid starving, they migrate in mass numbers, and sometimes a herd of lemmings will come upon a cliff edge...and the lemmings at the back of the herd cannot see the cliff edge, so they actually PUSH forward, towards food, unknowingly pushing their leader lemmings off these cliffs! If they are lucky, there will be water at the bottom of said cliff...but only because they can also swim! "Lemmings at Sunset" is an original acrylic painting, measuring 8" x 10" on a canvas panel. I have opted to make them as cute as possible, because the thought of them tumbling off a cliff and through the colorful sky was frightening enough. Initialed on the front; full signature, title, and date on the back. Watermark does not appear on the original piece. There are work in progress pictures here on my Facebook page. The original piece is available here in my etsy shop!
