This is a portrait of my mother, done from a black and white photograph. The demons were not in the photograph, but I believe that my mother battled them every day.

She raised five kids, and her work was never, ever done. Some might call her a martyr, but she just did the best she could. She would do housework from sunup to sundown. Of course, we all had chores, but most of it fell on her shoulders.

She is 82 years old now and takes care of herself and her two cats. Mom is one of the strongest and most independent women I have ever known.
