Art: Bee on Asters by Artist RUTH J JAMIESON
Bees are one of the busiest insects in the garden. Watching them diligently collect their sweet burdens from the blossoms and listening to their humm and buzz is a hallmark of summer in the garden. As I watch them at work, I always wonder how and why they choose one bloom over another, what attracts them to each one that they choose to harvest from. As a child I always pictured bees in my mind’s eye with tiny little nectar buckets attached to each of their little legs which they then went and emptied at the hive before heading out on another harvesting flight. This photo and many others I have taken proved to me that there indeed no nectar buckets. Disillusionment is I suppose a great part of live and certainly character building. On this day my asters were buzzing with tiny nectar harvesters and I was able to capture some of their unending labours.
