This painting is a combination of the idea of El Dia de los Muertos that lingers in my mind from my childhood spent living in San Miguel de Allende, and the little gothic babies I have been possesed by of late. Here is my version of Catrina, a traditional Day of the Dead figure.
I have always adored The Day of the Dead. I adored the sugar skulls, the bright colour, the fireworks and the tiny paper mache skeletons. “Skeletons and skulls are found everywhere. Chocolate skulls, marzipan coffins, and white chocolate skeletons. Special loaves of bread are baked, called pan de muertos, and decorated with "bones.” Can you conceive of anything more wonderful than laughing at death?
