In Mexico, in Patzcuaro, which is the site of probably the most famous pilmigrage for el Dia de los Muertos, the parades start early and last longer than just the day. Many boats filled with costumed participants and loaded with abundant food, and wine, and candles make their way to the small island in the lake where the ancient cemetery is. You can see the glow reflected off the lake, and it takes on an otherworldy hedonism, which is the denial of Death, as well as the honoring of Death, and the affirmation of life. This piece was made with that clearly in mind, using a photograph of skulls from the archeological museum in Mexico City (which sits atop an ancent and revered Aztec site).
