Continuing my Circus & Sideshow ACEO series...with my version of the Fiji Mermaid...if you look closely, you can see another oddity behind the mermaid- a two headed pig!
The Fiji Mermaid was a "cabinet curiosity"- essentially, it was a creation made from the mummified remains of the torso of a monkey, and the body of a fish; occasionally it was an actual live person with the affliction known as sirenomelia, or a dugong (similar to a manatee). The most well known Fiji Mermaid was under the watchful eye of P.T.Barnum, though the creation was eventually lost in a fire.
This is an original ACEO (Art Cards, Editions, and Originals- 3.5" x 2.5") created in archival inks and acrylic paints on bristol. It is initialed on the front; full signature, title, and date are on the back. Watermark does not appear on the actual art.
