What
makes a group of disparate objects look united when we view it? One
thing is the lighting of the objects. Our vision is dependent fully on
light and in the real world objects are all lit by ambient lighting of a
certain color (wavelength), intensity, angle, etc. This makes the group
of objects "go together". Another important factor, the most important
maybe, is how we conceptualize what we see. A group of disparate objects
can become a yard when we see a fence around it or a neighborhood when
we realize we are viewing an aerial photo. What we see and what we think
are impossible to separate.
In a painting, you can
use style, simplicity, repetition, composition, title all to unite it
into a whole. The danger with the titles is that they can limit what you
see as well as add to it. Please feel free to disregard the titles in
these works to free up your vision.
