In engineering when you are trying to solve a complicated problem, you
begin by defining your questions carefully and then looking at what you
know about the specific system and what you know about how systems
behave generally. Experiments are critical to the resolution process.
In oil painting, I knew that for many years I have been most attracted
to painterly and abstract works. At the beginning of this year, I began
my own exploration of abstraction. My question is: how can I paint in
oil an abstract picture which represents what I feel when I see a great
abstract work and incorporates what I know about color, line,
composition ... the formal elements of painting?
