Art: To Be... by Artist Carissa M Martos
You can't tell from looking at the little boy in this picture, but he's brushed death twice on the operating table, and will do so over and over again. Born with Craniosynostosis, he never had a skull as perfect and well formed as the one that sits before him on the headstone. And yet, when faced with Hamlet's decision, Julian always decides to keep fighting.

"To be, or not to be--that is the question: Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune Or to take arms against a sea of troubles And by opposing end them. To die, to sleep-- No more--and by a sleep to say we end The heartache, and the thousand natural shocks That flesh is heir to. 'Tis a consummation Devoutly to be wished." -William Shakespeare in Hamlet

All proceeds from the sale of this work that exceed printing and shipping costs will be donated to Cranio Kids, an organization that provides information and support to families of children with craniosynostosis.

A digital photograph, retouched in Paint and then editing software, printed on velvety artist's paper that is soft to the touch.
