Art: JOSEPHINE by Artist Becci Hethcoat
My work represents all of the seven sins. I have used the dictionary definitions of each sin printed and applied them to the canvas in a circular fashion as I feel that sin is very well represented by the spiral. At the top and bottom of the piece are photos of hearts and antique daggers that were used to cut the hearts out of virgins. At the bottom of the piece is an old photograph of a young girl making her first communion. Over her is netting shaped like a house and she is holding a bloody heart. This painting has incredible personal significance for me and there was a theraputic quality to it's creation. This piece was created for this show and was the first time I have worked this large with mixed media. It is primarily an acrylic painting embellished with beads, thread, netting, paper and an old photograph. It was painted on gallery wrapped canvas and then tacks were added around the edges to finish it off. Unfortunately, my digital camera just does not capture the depth of the various overlays of paint and media. I will be offering this piece for sale as I can't seem to hang it in my house.
