Art: Clamming In The Bay by Artist Carol Thompson

"Clamming In The Bay"

"The hardy people of the Pacific Northwest are spending time to go 'clamming in the bay' at Newport, Oregon. From Senior citizens to young children, this is a healthy family activity."

Artist Comments: "While spending a day in Newport, Oregon, I watched as early morning clam diggers gathered on the muddy tide flats. People of all ages spread out across the bay, wearing colorful garb and carrying shovels, pails and other paraphenalia with the anticipation of a bountiful harvest. I used a series of photographs to create a pleasing composition. I liked the way the groups of people overlapped, yet everyone was drawn together as a whole by the bands of waves licking at their boots. Gouache was my chosen medium as it lends itself to minute detail. The style can be called illustrative because the people are rendered in a broad and simplistic manner."
