This week's theme: Lighthouses

Lighthouses came along not long after sailors started navigating regular routes. Not missing the mouth of the harbor or avoiding treacherous rocks and currents was as crucial then as it is now. No doubt the lure and the fascination with lighthouses has been around almost as long. Often feats of engineering, lighthouses were unique in appearance as well as attracting a unique type person to the life of a lighthouse keeper. What makes the deepest impression on our fragile mortality, however, is the fundamentally profound nature of their purpose. When we see that light, it's more that just a light in a tower. It's the light in the darkness, the warning of danger and the way to safe passage. Lighthouses are spoken as if they are alive. And at night, when we watch the light go round and round, we know that they are.
