I had a few vanitas paintings that I could have entered for the Vanitas Exhibit, but I wanted to paint something new - a more modern take on vanitas. Years ago, if you wanted a self-portrait, you had to either paint it yourself or be wealthy enough to pay an artist. Now with smartphones, self portraits are not only available at your fingertips, but are pasted all over social media for the world to see. "Selfies Killed the Portrait Painter" is meant to symbolize how technological advances affect art as a whole as well as the vanity of today's incessant display of selfies for social media validation.
This is an original painting on canvas stretched over a solid wood
frame. The 3/4" staple-free sides are painted to compliment the
painting. Finished with a high quality varnish. No frame needed - Ready
for
Hanging!
