A delicate painting with pale blues and greens, accented with shimmering iridescent medium on the blossoms. This elvish woman has wavy hair of darkest gray, and wears a lovely cloud blue jacket.
"Lady of Lilies" was inspired by the work of Alphonse Mucha and the stained glass work of Louis Comfort Tiffany, both from the Art Nouveau movement.
For the lilies in the background, I wanted to see if I could create a stained glass effect on paper. I achieved this by outlining around their main shapes without breaking them up--keeping the details soft and the edges hard. The elvish woman has a dignified and elegant look about her that I often see in the figures Mucha painted.
This is among my favorite paintings, despite its small size. It has a portrait feel to it, and it is full of mature dignity and poise.
