Art: Clean that Gun, Comrade by Artist Holly Morningstar
"Clean that Gun, Comrade" is a very personal drawing to me. Inspired by my dear friend Michael Lucchesi who was recently deployed to Iraq, I decided to attempt to depict the hope the war in Iraq is bringing to the children who live there, especially the Iraqi girls. Under the new government, there is hope that they will be able to pursue their dreams like everyone should. The shrouded girl represents Iraqi girls of the present, the drowning blue woman represents the loss of innocence they faced under Saddam the loss they face now with the war. The butterfly represents the hope that spawns from all of this. The green figure represents the soul, and wrapped around the soul is the shroud of expression which leads to a vehicle for that expression, the guitar. Music is such an important part of expression and all of Earth has its own song. In black and white in the top left is a silhouette of a woman figure in a translucent bridal gown. Before the war, women in Iraq were nothing more than domesticated housewives, but there is hope now that this will change. There's hope for a better tomorrow when even the women of Iraq will be able to compose their song.
