Bluebonnets have been loved since man first trod the vast prairies of Texas. Indians wove fascinating tales around them. Early Spanish priests gathered the seed and grew them around their missions. This practice gave rise to the myth that the padres had brought them from Spain, but cannot be true since the two predominient species of bluebonnets are found only in Texas and at no other location in the world. The bluebonnet is to Texas what the shamrock is to Ireland, the cherry blossom to Japan, the lily is to France, the rose to England and the tulip to Holland.
The state of Texas has five state flowers, more or less, and they are all bluebonnets. The color range is from white, pink, red and the deep dark blue that dominates photos. But if it is a bluebonnet it is considered the state flower no matter its color.
I added the state colors of the flag behind the Longhorn because I am from Austin the Capital and the Longhorn for the University of Texas. "Hook 'Em Horns"
