Art: Metamorphosis by Artist Cynthia M Guajardo
This is one of a group of similarly designed vessels that I made last year. I had been primarily throwing very narrow necked bottles and was looking for a new clay expression that would be functional as well as interesting to look at. "Metamorphosis" is the result of that and also describes my transitional work from this time period. I threw cylinders and after I had collected about 6 of them, began to add elements to the pieces. I was also looking for an alternative to the traditional trimmed foot on a vase and decided to take a dowel and hammer in an idented shape. On this piece I crafted a block of clay made from alternating pieces of brown and white stoneware. Once I had shaped this into a rectangle of sorts, I made very thin slices, which I stretched and altered and attached to the piece. Because I was looking for a contemporary feel to the vessel, I used an egg-shell colored glaze on the body of the piece, and left the sprig unglazed. I really enjoyed this process and continue to use my new form in my work. Metamorphosis also served as a spring board for other ceramic work that is currently in process.
