About the inspiration: This drawing is a surrealistic portrait of one of my musical heroes, Scott H Biram. It is also a tribute to my favorite artist, Frida Kahlo (which is where the resemblance to her painting "The Broken Column" comes from). Earlier this month I became aware of all the things these two people had in common and thought it served as an opportunity to pay tribute to both of them.
Like Frida, Scott was in a life-threatening accident (a head-on collision with an 18-wheeler in the spring of 2003). Although he has fully recovered after several corrective surgeries, their methods of recovery were similar. While Frida turned to painting, Scott turned to his music, which had always helped him through hard times in the past. Within weeks after he was released from the hospital, he performed at the Continental in Austin, TX.
About the process and drawing: I created this drawing with chalk pastels. Scott's figure is in the center, as he is the primary focus. Starting at the neck, his "insides" are visible and this reveals a neck of a guitar whose strings entwine towards the middle to form an "S" that encompasses the first letter of the themes (Scott, Strength and (guitar)Strings). The title is written on the banner that is being carried by the flying bird in the upper right-hand corner. I incorporated the bird and banner for two reasons: To fit the criteria of the A is for Apple show and to add yet another resemblance to Frida who incorporated birds and banners at least twice in her work.
