My first choice of mediums was charcoals as I found the stark contrast of black and white with the organic shapes created a strong, powerful dynamic.

I also found it was one medium where with only one piece you could create a multitude of variations of blacks.

I tried to mimic this look and feel of charcoal in Cirripedia with paint. However with paint, you have many choices for ‘black- warm cool, transparent etc…

I liked the dry brush technique and found it helped capture the essence of charcoal with out being volatile.  I also found the different blacks created different shades- perhaps a ‘happy accident’ to explore further.
