Art: Cape Meares Lighthouse by Artist Carol Thompson

Still standing at it's originally authorized location, this squat, sturdy lighthouse has faithfully guided ships since 1890.  The beautiful first order Fresnel lens is one of only two eight sided lights in America.  Now a tourist attraction, this diminutive lighthouse and its magnificent lens can be seen at Cape Meares park, 10 miles West of Tillamook, Oregon.

Artist comment:  I like this little lighthouse!  On a trip to Tillamook, Oregon, my husband and I took the time to drive to the lighthouse.  We were unable to go inside at that time, but I photographed and made color notes for a future oil painting.  On a medium sized canvas, I sketched the composition.  I decided to render the scene as on a bright overcast day, so I could use cool greys with a hint of sunshine.  I had fun with the lens and when I painted the 'cap', I made it look shiny and wet (the icing on the cake!).
