The Boy's Club

Art: The Boy's Club by Artist Kim Loberg
'The Boy's Club' is a photorealism study using only warm colors. The subjects are two of my stud horses, Chance (Chief Jackie Skipper) the large one in the center and Cactus Jack, the small sorrel in the bottom corner. The pony in the top corner is Pepper Jack and the grey gelding is Reno.

I began this painting by doing a collage of photos I had taken of my horses in Photoshop. After I printed off a color copy (in warm colors), I marked off a grid on the copy and on the primed canvas. I underpainted each square on the canvas with a cool color before I actually began painting the horses. Then, I only painted the shapes I saw within each square and did not focus on the actual horse shape.

'The Boy's Club' was painted on hand-stretched canvas using acrylic paints. It is gallery framed using oak and is ready to hang.

I also painted a cool color study of the same collage image and am presently working on a realistic painting of the horse study, free of the grid work, to complete the set.

This painting, and the 'Blue Boy's Club,' was selected for the juried March 2011 arts competition show at the Norfolk Arts Center in Norfolk Nebraska.
