The study was created in Photoshop using photos I had taken of our horses. I then printed off a cool colored copy of the collage and created a grid on the actual copy. I also drew a grid on gessoed canvas and painted each square on the canvas a differnt warm color to create an underpainting.
I allowed myself more expressive freedom on this painting and painted each square using color and geometric shapes. I wasn't interested in the actual lines of each horse, just the shapes of color and shadows. The result is more abstract and colorful.
'Blue Boy's Club' is painted on a hand-stretched, gessoed canvas using acrylic paints. It is gallery framed in oak and is ready to hang. I am also working on a third painting in the series that will be more representational, without the grids.
This painting, and 'The Boy's Club,' was selected for the juried March 2011 arts competition show at the Norfolk Arts Center in Norfolk Nebraska.
