Red Flowers Spiral Ostrich

Art: Red Flowers Spiral Ostrich by Artist So Jeo LeBlond
This beautiful ostrich pysanka was made in the traditional batik wax and dye process on a real blown ostrich egg, which is sealed with a coat of protective, crystal clear finish. It measures approximately 6 inches tall and 5 inches across.

The process begins by sanding the egg for a couple of hours until it is silky smooth. Some Pysanky artists skip this step and will use the egg as is, but I feel that the extra work is worth it. Sanding removes all the bumps and grooves and makes it so that the pores are barely noticeable. It also reveals a deeper, chaulkier layer of the egg that will allow the dyes to take more evenly and with greater intensity. It took over 2 hours of just pencilling to draw out the design and hours upon hours of waxing and dyeing to complete it. This design features spiraling creeping vines flowing in red flower buds and shining stars.
