Nightshade - Solanum dulcamara

Art: Nightshade - Solanum dulcamara by Artist So Jeo LeBlond
Now available on eBay!

This beautiful batik egg was lovingly created in the traditional method of Pysanky, using a batik wax and dye process on a real blown turkey egg.  Sealed with a coat of archival, industrial grade UV resistant, crystal clear finish, it's finished size measures approximately 3 1/4" tall.

When we first moved to our farmhouse here in Scotsburn, Nova Scotia I was enchanted to find the prettiest little woody vines with flowers and then later succulent red berries growing all around our old barn.  Lovely little purple blooms with bright yellow centers, reminiscent of the potato plants that I grew in my garden.  Always curious about plants and their names since childhood, I researched and found out they were Solanum ducamara, or more commonly known as Bittersweet Nightshade, a plant that is not surprisingly from the same family as the potato and tomato but it's leaves and berries are poisonous.  Although very beautiful, I was worried about our then small children accidentally poisoning themselves with the tempting berries, so I pulled what plants I could find.  Little did I know how invasive this species is and every year the vines grew back bigger and more beautiful!  I finally gave up on trying to rid ourselves of these worrisome plants and have opted for education instead.  We know enjoy seeing the beautiful little flowers each year as they snake their way through the bushes and along the ground around our property.

The process begins by meticulously drawing out the desgin in pencil before it goes through a process of waxing and dyeing. Etching technique is used to create the raised borders and create a subtle three dimensional effect.

As with all my eggs, yours will come with a FREE lacquered, dark wooden stand and digital COA (Certificate of Authenticity) that allows you to register your piece in an online art database and also a signed copy.
