Nerthus as Lady of the Lake

Art: Nerthus as Lady of the Lake by Artist Sherry Key
Imagine a white face just coming to the surface of the water. Seaweed looking hair floating beneath.

Nerthus, Norse Germanic goddess of earth, bogs, lakes, streams, and fresh water. Here she is depicted as Lady Of The Lake.

A combination of both earth and water, a bog would have been the ideal place for those who were sacrificed to Nerthus, or even those that happened to look on the face of Nerthus, and had the deadly honor of being drowned.

Originally I did this painting at the end of 2011 because this show was on the EBSQ Exhibit Calendar for early 2012 then some of the shows were re-arranged through the year and what do you know it ends up as one of the first shows of 2013.

At the end of 2011 I had done a lot of research and this was one of the goddesses I was drawn too, to paint. I can't find where I got the original information on Nerthus and her connection to water but I have been to several sites where she is a goddess of not only earth but bogs, lakes, and streams. Here is one of those sites:

I love the freedom of painting outside the lines where creativity can continue to flow. Acrylic on un-stretched canvas.
