This piece was created for the Waxing Lyrical exhibition here at EBSQ and was inspired by the Echo and The Bunnymen song, "The Killing Moon." I chose this song because it is one of my favorites of all time. I like to create art that tells a story and I've always thought this song would marry well with my artwork. To get the full effect please open up two screens and view the video alongside the art. Here is
The Killing Moon. You may have to right-click the link to do this.
Not only did I use the lyrics, but I also focused on the colors and movement in the official video, using the combination of lyrics and video as a guide. There are some literal interpretations; "Under blue moon I saw you" and "the sky all hung with jewels," for instance. I listened to the song repeatedly, and watched the movement and colors in the video, focusing on the gray figure (the grim reaper, who will "wait until you give yourself to him"); except my figure is a woman dressed in gray who appears beautiful and alluring with her magic wand and stars swirling around her waist and head. She will capture you with her beauty. Just be careful. You're in another world here and, once inside, your fate is in her hands.
This is a 12 x 12" analog collage (cut paper and glue - over 50 separate pieces), completed in January of 2016. Here are the full lyrics:
THE KILLING MOON
Under blue moon I saw you
So soon you'll take me
Up in your arms
Too late to beg you or cancel it
Though I know it must be the killing time
Unwillingly mine
Fate
Up against your will
Through the thick and thin
He will wait until
You give yourself to him
In starlit nights I saw you
So cruelly you kissed me
Your lips a magic world
Your sky all hung with jewels
The killing moon
Will come too soon
Fate
Up against your will
Through the thick and thin
He will wait until
You give yourself to him
Under blue moon I saw you
So soon you'll take me
Up in your arms
Too late to beg you or cancel it
Though I know it must be the killing time
Unwillingly mine
Fate
Up against your will
Through the thick and thin
He will wait until
You give yourself to him
Fate
Up against your willThrough the thick and thinHe will wait untilYou give yourself to him...
