This is a picture of the judges of Project Light Green, a nation-wide story competition for writers under five years of age, on March 28, 1968 after reading Herman's "Sofia and Gwen," a touching story of lust, deception, and the cost of war. The rules of the competition stated that the story be written about the popular pair Dick and Jane in Springtime. Although Dick appeared briefly in the story, Herman’s failure to conform cost him the competition and his parents an invitation to the Project Light Green Ball. It was this experience that caused Herman to put down his pencil and pick up his crayons.
