PJ Gorman

Artist's Profile

My name is PJ Gorman. Some of the places I have called home include Washington DC, St. Louis, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and most recently Perry County Pennsylvania, one of the last places on the east coast without a traffic light.

I am an abstract artist whose influences include the entire decade of the 1970's and blasts of color right to the brain from streaming images coming through the television set. Music is my favorite form of entertainment and I love to paint what I hear. My work has been characterized by some as psychedelic or shamanistic, but its more of a product of the over stimulus in my own head and my environment. I equate my style to that of a primitive man waking up in our current age and trying to make sense of this chaotic world.

Over the last 20 years I've created a vast body of artwork, had extremely strange experiences as a military officer, drank beer with Timothy Leary, hung out with Ken Keasy and Hunter S. Thompson. I've been guided by the simple principle of "follow your bliss" and believe if you do what love, you'll find your place in the universe.

Ok , for the text books, here is my "Artist Statement".

Modern man dealing with his primitive feelings in a futuristic world of technology. The asymmetry is important in my work to retain an organic feeling and reflects a struggle for unattainable perfection in life. I am evoking mythological and shamanistic themes, representing powers outside the realm of ordinary experience. My influence draws upon the art of tribal cultures it is from that point of view I approach art.
