The Debate

Art: The Debate by Artist Lisa Thornton Whittaker

The defendant angrily leaps to his feet, shaking a can of spam over his head. Exhausted, the lawyer looks away in disgust. The judge barks for everyone to restore decorum to the court. All the while, the bailiff numbly holds his stance behind the exhibits of stacks of spam cans and a ghastly photo of dangling victims. Something in this strange world of fish has gone terribly, terribly wrong. . .

This digital piece was completed with Photoshop out of all found images. The subjects were inspired by the prospectus of EBSQ’s annual Spam and Trout show. Everything from the lawyer’s toupee to the walls and furnishings of the courtrooms were manipulated to fit within the composition. I can’t really say what made me choose this subject, it’s just weird. I do like the way it turned out, however, and believe that it creates an unfinished story within the mind of the viewer that extends beyond a bunch of dead fish arguing over cans of spam. What is the scandal? Who are the fish in the photo? Where did the defendant get his pants?
