The strange thing is that I went cross-country (to Chicago from Los Angeles) just a few weeks ago and the railway trip covers exactly the same areas as Route 66. In fact, I sat up late one night in the lounge car discussing this with 2 "Route 66 Experts" who explore a part of it every summer. The scenery was fantastic and inspiring and it reminded me of when Route 66 first came into disuse because of the bypasses, and all the little towns on the way (many still served by rail) created an uproar about how, with no traffic, they would become ghost towns. Many did. Anyway with all the 66 scenery fresh in my mind, I started this with pencil, w/c pencil, inks, and metallic paints. I worked on watercolor paper. SOLD on eBay.
