Serengeti Summer

Art: Serengeti Summer by Artist Doris H. David
This organic abstract is derived from nature, the essence of which is especially felt in the color and movement of the piece. I have attempted to give the viewer a feeling of place, season, and energy, basically through the use of color, form, and movement. Most of what I have chosen to express, comes from a place within myself and seems to "play out" as I paint, taking a turn here or there as I work.

A friend of mine from S. Africa said that she "wondered if an American could get it right?" After seeing the painting, she concluded, "Yup. The purple does it for me especially. We have purple in our sunsets. The quiet dun colour of the veld (fields). The movement and the vibration." The name Serengeti is derived from a Masai word meaning savannah or open space.

At some point, I think I visited the coral reef idea in my mind, as well. Kind of reminds one of undersea vents, coral, etc....however the giraffes and heat, etc. won the day.

This watercolor was painted on Kilimanjaro 140lb. cold press paper with Yarka watercolors.
