Skoll and Hati are the wolves of Norse Mythology who chase the moon and the sun. We don't know very much about them.  In some online references they were said to be brothers, others not. In some cases it was Skoll who chased the sun and not the moon. I decided to consult the original source, the Poetic Edda. Skoll and Hati appear in the Grimnismal, one of the mythological poems of the Poetic Edda.


Skoll's heritage is not said outright, but most texts confirm he is the brother of Hati. The passage above states Hati is the son of Hrothvinir; which translates to "The Might Wolf" i.e. Fenrir. Therefore, Skoll and Hati are Loki's grandsons. Also, "burning bride of heaven" implies Hati is the chaser of the sun, making Skoll the chaser of the moon.

I decided to portray the two wolves as opposites, sun and moon, black and white. The tree in the center loosely symbolizes Yggdrasil, the legendary tree on which the nine realms exist.
