I believe these are puffballs. To find so many together, hugging each other so tightly and just beginning to mottle - such a sight!! Their skin was so soft and smooth in contrast to the rough bark/log upon which they had made their home. They're basically so simple in nature, a sphere, but in a group such as this they become amazing things!
