Dragon and Unicorn

- by Nico Niemi

This week's theme: Unicorns

Seals have been found bearing the image of a unicorn found at sites that were home to the ancient Indus Valley Civilization. The ancient Greeks described them when writing of natural history. Historically, unicorns have varied in appearance. One description gives them the legs of an elephant; another a burgundy head. Unicorns weren't always peaceful creatures, either. They were once thought to be ill tempered and easily provoked. It's from the poets, minstrels and storytellers of the middle ages that we get the unicorn we know today. Unicorns have a history that is thousands of years old, but there are two things have always been constant - the horn that grows from the center of their forehead and their ability to capture our imagination.
