Garden View

- by Dawn Lee Thompson

This week's theme: The Woman In The Window

Juliet, Rapunzel and Jezebel are three of the more famous women in the window. Literature and art have long delighted in placing women at these openings between what is hidden and what is there for all to see; between that which is held captive and the freedom of the world outside. Whether they peer out of seraglios, castles or suburban homes, women and windows are a combination of mystery, contrast and beauty that captures interest and holds attention.

I was hoping for a sense of lightness and a hint of mystery in this piece. The girl appears very young and slightly sly. She also looks as if she may be pregnant, (or maybe not?) I wanted the setting to be ambiguous as well. The figure is somewhat confined, thought it appears as if she may be out of doors.
