Snow Day

- by Joanna Daneman

This week's theme: Snow

It's that time of year. The temperatures drop and the precipitation that falls from the sky is often white and fluffy. Provided you don't have to drive on uncleared roads, it can be a wonderful, magical thing. Either way, for those that live where snow falls, it is a beat in the rhythm of the seasons and is tightly woven into our lives.

Art: Snow Day by Artist Joanna Daneman
A piece using body color splashed over transparent watercolor to give the effect of snow. A woman walks a beagle or other hound in a driving sleet (we don't have much snow here--freezing rain is more lour weather.) The cool colors on the woman with the umbrella are to contrast to show how she's feeling the cold while the dog is warm to show how he is innocently enjoying his walk. The painting was painted in transparent watercolor, then brushed with white gouache and wiped. This effect left the outlines (which dry darker sometimes if you paint outside-in in a shape) and lifted the centers. I left the sienna color on the dog . Then I splashed more white gouache with a brush, tapping it to make lines of paint to indicate sleet, and held the painting upside down and at an angle to get the right look.
